Island residents on Ambergris Caye, Belize woke up on April 1, 2017, to shocking footage of an altercation that took place at Central Park, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize involving night club patrons and San Pedro Police officers. With some sixteen weeks of intense training, one of the biggest cohorts of recruits to date marched out in style in front of dignitaries to be officially admitted to the force. Over one hundred and fifty became police officers; among those were some Special Constables, who also trained to become full-fledged officers of the law. The program is being used to fight delinquency, youth violence, and gang involvement through school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom courses. Over thirteen thousand Police officers from across the U.S. and Central American countries have been trained and certified. Belize is one of the countries using the GREAT program to reach at risk youths and since Tuesday police officers from Belize and El Salvador have been attending the “Central American GREAT Officer Training.” Andrea Polanco tells us more about what the officers are learning in the eight-day work shop.

Three men are tonight behind bars at the Orange Walk Police Station after they were found in possession of a total of 16 pounds of cannabis valued at a total of twenty four thousand Belize Dollars. The three individuals namely, Michael Requena, of a Belize City address, Keith Patrick Flowers, who recently deported from the USA after spending time in a US prison for Kidnapping offences and Alrick Smith, no stranger to police who was recently arrested and charged by Orange Walk Police for drug trafficking, were headed towards Belize City coming from the direction of Corozal when they were intercepted by Police.
